It’s no new information that the coronavirus pandemic caught us by surprise last year. At the time, no one was thinking of a work-life balance or anything of that sort. However, as soon as the virus came along, we found ourselves making rather uncomfortable adjustments to our lives.

Our movements became restricted. Unfortunately, several thousand people across the world got laid off. Many of those who were not laid off had to work from home almost indefinitely.

We’re willing to take a wild guess and say that you’ve also had to work from home for quite some time. On the bright side of this new arrangement, you get to work from the comfort of your home or anywhere else. However, on the dark side, you’ll have to deal with creating a work-life balance during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sadly, this isn’t as easy as it may sound or seem. For that reason, we’ve come up with a few different ways you can go about it. They are:

  1. Define your workspace

If you must create a work-life balance during the Covid-19 pandemic, you must define where you work. You see, the human mind is designed to function in specific ways. If there are no barriers between your areas of work, play, relaxation, feeding, sleep, your brain will likely mix them all.

You might want to work on your bed, and your mind will immediately begin inducing sleep, even if you weren’t sleepy before. You might feel like getting work done on your couch, and you’ll suddenly start getting this irresistible urge to see a movie. The list goes on, but we are sure you understand our point by now.

You need to train your mind to understand that certain places are for work. That way, when you go there, you can focus squarely on what needs to be done instead of getting distracted and creating a backlog of work for you to take care of later.

This helps to maintain your work-life balance by ensuring that you do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. That way, you can finish work as and when due and attend to other parts of your life.

  1. Establish proper boundaries

Look, you’re a human. This fact remains no matter how productive or goal/result-oriented you might be. For that reason, you need to understand that you cannot work all day and all night.

So, establish proper boundaries with your bosses and clients, especially if you’re a freelancer. Help them understand that you’ll be available at specific periods only. Even if they live in a different timezone, find a working period that’ll function adequately for both of you and stick to it.

The danger in flouting this rule is that you’ll get messages and tasks late at night when you’re preparing to go to bed, and you’ll be expected to deliver. Unless they’re paying substantially for your time or the effects of sleep deprivation on your health, you can’t let them waltz in and out of your schedule as they please. Even if they were, it still isn’t advisable.

  1. Manage your time properly

Having set proper boundaries, you must remember that it’s still easy for you to get distracted. Under normal circumstances, you’d have to deal with HR for coming late, and that alone is enough motivation to be up each morning very early.

But, while working from home, things are slightly different. Every day feels like Saturday, and you might be tempted to treat every day like the weekend. However, nothing is more dangerous than that.

So, manage your time correctly and ensure that you do your work and meet your targets when you need to. That is the only way you can indeed maintain a work-life balance because if you don’t, work will eventually spill over into other parts of your life.

  1. Move around often

Your health is an essential part of your life. Working from home can be fun, but it can also be a great avenue to forget that you’re meant to move around.

Unfortunately, this is incredibly bad for you. Science says that you could be shortening your lifespan with every four hours or so that you spend sitting without moving. The list of consequences is endless.

So, move around a little. Instead of taking meetings on your seat, walk and talk. Instead of sitting down and writing those reports for several hours, find time to go on occasional breaks. During that period, you could walk a little or take little yoga stretches.

  1. Connect with other people

We, humans, are social creatures. However you choose to see it, the face is and remains that humans like to connect with other humans. It’s what’s best for our mental state and, coincidentally, for creating a work-life balance during the Covid-19 pandemic.

So, as much as you want to work and stay productive, remember to connect with your friends and family. Everyone is going through a lot during the pandemic. It’s only fitting that you reach out to those who matter.

Above all this, remember to be kind to yourself. There will be days when you’ll work too much or too little. It doesn’t make you worthless, and it certainly doesn’t mean you’re the worst professional that’s walked the earth. You faulted. All you have to do under those circumstances is forgive yourself and get right back to doing what is right.

Who is an Intrapreneur?

In the simplest form possible, an intrapreneur is a person who works for a company but is primarily driven by an entrepreneurial mindset. Unlike regular employees, this person doesn’t wait to do what is meant to be done. Like an entrepreneur, this individual can spot problems with processes and work environments. They can develop solutions almost on the fly that would work excellently in getting rid of those problems. An intrapreneur is self-motivated, and they often treat the business with the same enthusiasm and zest as they would treat their own business.

For this reason, they’re in high demand across the business world in Africa and every other part of the world, and the chances are that your entrepreneurial taste buds are already tingling to have a taste of their resourcefulness. The few attributes listed in our definition do not nearly begin to cover what an intrapreneur does to contribute to your business’s success. Allow us to explain.

Three Ways an Intrapreneur Contributes to the Success of Your Business

1. They Increase Productivity

In our definition, we mentioned and explained explicitly that an intrapreneur is often very self-motivated. Intrapreneurs do not need to be told what to do before they get right to work. It is simply in their nature to get things done. With an intrapreneur on your team, you’re very likely to see their effects immediately, especially when you assign them specialized tasks.

It is even more glaring when you make them head a team, temporary or otherwise. They’ll likely be able to carry everyone else along, pulling the team together where necessary and bringing out the best in everyone around. It’s nothing special to them. It’s simply what they do.

2. They Solve Problems

When setting up a business, you should create systems and patterns that enable the company to function optimally. This should happen even in your absence. It’s the only way to ensure that you survive in the harsh realities of today’s business world. However, no matter how much you optimize your business for excellence, the chances are that there would still be small loopholes.

An intrapreneur is deftly skilled at finding these loopholes and helping you patch them up. This can be rewarding to your business in more ways than one. Examples include improving your workflow processes and boosting your profits in the long run.

3. They Innovate

If you must survive in the corporate world today, you must continue fine-tuning, improving, and working on yourself and your business. This directly translates to innovating and coming up with new ways of doing things.

If all you have are regular employees who simply want to come to work, do their tasks robotically, and exit the building, this might be a challenge. The reason is that these people do not have the drive required to help you improve the company the way you want. However, if you have an intrapreneur within your team, you can rest assured that you’ll have a consistent supply of ideas and thought processes. This will help you improve your business when required.

We are willing to bet that you are not exactly where you were 5 or 10 years ago. You have grown, improved and become a much better version of yourself. After all, not many people are able to reach the heights you have reached and conquer the challenges you’ve conquered.

But, have you ever stopped to consider that there is more for you out there? Have you ever stopped to consider that perhaps, you have not exactly tapped into all that you can be or do? If we were to take a wild guess, we would say yes. You have probably not fully explored your potentials and despite your achievements, you are probably only just scratching the surface. But, how exactly do you know for sure?

Here are the top signs that show you are not exploring the depths of your career potential:

1. You no longer have goals to focus on

Goals are the driving force behind achievements. You cannot go about exploring the depths of your potential if you are merely roaming around without goals, simply hoping for things to happen to you.

Of course, you might have a few wins here and there, and one or two things might work for you. But it is nothing compared to how far you can go when you are laser-focused on achieving a particular goal or set of goals.

If you find yourself going to work every day without a clear plan of what you want to achieve in the near or distant future, the chances are that you are not quite living to your potential yet.

2. You’re falling out with old friends

Growing up, you probably had conversations with your friends about who you wanted to become as an adult. As adults, some of your friends would have gone on to become experts in their chosen fields.

Now, if you have been exploring your potential and climbing higher on your career ladder, you will find yourself evolving with them. You would be able to attend their events, parties, functions, and everything else in between. When they get caught up in work and cannot immediately attend to you, you would not feel bad or jealous in any way because you understand from experience how demanding it can be to constantly seek self-improvement.

However, if you have opted for stagnation at any point, the likelihood is that you may not be in the same circles as your childhood friends any longer. You would feel a clear difference between your social status.

If you notice that this already happening to you, you may not be living up to your potential.

3. You spend a lot of time thinking about what could have been

You see, when something is not right with us, our brains and minds have several ways of letting us know.

If you were successfully smashing your goals as you set them and aiming for new ones, there would be nothing to think about besides what next to do and accomplish. If, however, the inverse is the case, you will likely find yourself sulking a lot about what you could have achieved at different points in time.

For some people, the thoughts could be mild, coming only now and then. For other people, they could be severe, leading to depression and what you might call a midlife crisis. Regardless, they are a sign that there’s something you could be doing that you aren’t. In other words, you are not exploring the depths of your career potential.

4. You constantly wonder if you have hit the final stage of your development

For starters, the easiest answer to that is probably a no. For every new level you attain, there’s always something new to learn, some new goal to achieve, or level to attain.

If you find yourself wondering if there’s anything else for you in your line of work, you might be underutilizing your potential. While it is okay to question if you have hit the final stage in your career, you must also be willing to answer those questions with a resounding NO!

5. You’re unhappy

Your company provides you with many benefits in your current position. This includes a nice car, an office with air conditioning and a view of the city, an assistant who calls you “sir/ma” and never questions your authority. All these would generally be things to make any executive proud.

However, if you find that your position no longer thrills you then there is the possibility that you want something more. If you want something more but are not getting it, you might be underutilizing your potentials.

How to Fix this

Get up!

Instead of simply feeling bad for yourself, get up and begin working better. Even if you do not have the training or skill required to improve immediately, acquire them! Speak to a mentor. Register for impactful training. Do whatever you can. Just refuse to be mediocre!

So, you were a high-flyer as an undergraduate, never settling for less, and eventually landed a great job after graduation. Promotion after promotion followed in quick successions and you find that you have peaked in your career.

If, however, you choose not to find that balance and only lean in the direction of settling in your career then you will have to deal with the following:

Resentment

Resentment always starts small. You may find yourself slightly discomfited by the side-appreciation you are getting at the company meeting in contrast to the major recognition your junior colleague is getting at the same function. Then, you will start to truly get bitter about it because, suddenly, everyone seems to only care about the things that the new guy is doing. Nobody remembers the six-figure sale you closed a couple of years ago. In fact, they hardly remember you anymore.

These thoughts and emotions will continue to pile up, making you a bitter and consistently angry person. What is worse is that these emotions will eventually prevent you from even being able to achieve anything. You become stuck in a vicious cycle of wanting more but not being able to get it.

Regret

It is hard to talk about everything wrong with settling in your career without talking about the big “R.”

Granted, you might not begin to resent other people who are constantly breaking new grounds in their career. Just maybe you will not care that they are getting more recognition than you.

However, even if you do not find yourself pained by the success of others, you may likely find yourself unsettled by your lack of success. Imagine going to work every single day, feeling down in the dumps because you know that you could be more, but you simply are not. Imagine knowing that that promotion could have been yours if only you had tried harder.

You see, regret is a horrible feeling that has the potential to cause significant damage to your mental health. Thankfully, it is avoidable. However, if you choose to settle in your current position, then it is something you will have to deal with sooner or later.

Untapped Potentials

Les Brown writes that the graveyard is probably the richest place on earth because it is filled with everything that humanity did not achieve. This is because people were afraid to go for their dreams or stick to what they had the potentials to excel at doing. Sad!

If you are reading this article on the different ways to accelerate your professional development, it is safe to say that you are no longer a newbie in the corporate terrain. The chances are that you have been there for some time now and are reading this article so that you can figure out your next step.

In the corporate landscape, it is commonplace to see some executives decide to take the low road in their professional development. They engage in office politics; play the role of the loyal pet to their superiors; and do exactly what is required of them, and no more. These individuals believe that they are entitled to better opportunities simply because they have been “good boys.”

The truth, as you may imagine, is that these methods are grossly ineffective. You really cannot get too far if you do not become more intentional about your growth and begin working towards it. In this piece, we will give you different ways you can take your career through the roof.

1. Ask for more work

We get it. You already feel choked as it is. This is especially so with the pandemic and all the struggles that come with being a worker in these times. While some might think that sitting in front of your laptop all day might be a walk in the park, we know better, and we understand that working from home during this pandemic isn’t so easy. If you don’t believe us, consider this news piece based on research from Stanford University. It affirms the existence of “Zoom fatigue” and why we get it.

Now, while you might feel like you already have enough on your plate, the chances are that your superiors only consider it the normal amount of work. So, if you genuinely want to accelerate your professional development, it might be best for you to start asking for more work. Not just any work, though. You should ask for more challenging work.

If you are worried that your current tasks will affect your productivity and your ability to deliver, the solution is simple – ditch them! Speak to your superiors about the possibility of delegating your current tasks. Better yet, speak about having them hold off on other regular tasks to give you more challenging work.

Doing so will show that you are proactive and capable of handling more tasks when you do get a promotion or something of that sort.

2. Gun for more

Now and then, companies send out adverts for vacant job positions that need to be filled. Hundreds and thousands of people often apply for these positions, some with excellent resumes. As you well know, many of them get rejected. So, what separates those who make the cut and the people given the boot? It lies in one’s ability to convince the hiring manager that they can do what they claim. However, these companies simply don’t have enough ways to confirm that the new hires are truly capable of doing what they promise.

That’s where you come in. If you are taking our advice and will be asking for more work; your company will already have a solid idea of your capabilities. In addition to that, you would be in the perfect position to fill the vacancy because you understand the intricacies of the company and can function perfectly without supervision.

With all that being the case, an excellent way for you to accelerate your professional development is to shoot for more. Whenever you see a job listing from your company, do not shy away simply because they didn’t ask you personally to apply for the vacancy. If there is no rule prohibiting your application, go for it and make conscious efforts to prove your abilities to them.

3. Lend a hand more often

Believe it or not, your relationship with your colleagues plays a significant role in your career advancement goals. So, instead of keeping to yourself all the time, lend a hand to your colleagues when work is assigned.

It could be as simple as helping them collate data from surveys. It could also be as tedious as helping them conduct the surveys in the first place. In all honesty, the more complex tasks you can help with, the better.

The benefit of doing this is that it shows you to be a team player. This quality is something that many employers and bosses look for. If you show them without provocation by helping colleagues where necessary and important, you’ll be getting yourself prepared for bigger opportunities.

Besides that, lending a hand puts you in the good books of multiple people in your place of work. This means you will have people rooting for you behind closed doors when you are not there.

Finally, ask a mentor. This is our final piece of advice for you on how to accelerate your professional development. The best thing to do is to get valuable advice from someone who knows the ropes and can help you develop yourself so intensely that you become a gem in the corporate world.
